The third drawer in the #4days4drawers Challenge from I Heart Organizing is one that I have been living with and hating for a couple of years now. Since we live in a bungalow with limited storage, this drawer was doing double-duty. Let’s just say it wasn’t going well…
It holds my Le Cruset as well as my dish towels and microfiber cleaning cloths. A strange combination, right? Well, my initial thinking was that the insides of the pots would hold the towels and cloths. It wasn’t working, but I couldn’t think of another place to store them…
Yep, here’s the before. It is clearly not a match made in organizing heaven (not to mention the random hooks and velcro that somehow made their way into this poor, overstuffed drawer.
I saw these acrylic shoe drawers all over Pinterest and swooned! I knew they would be the solution to my cleaning rag and dishtowel problem.
I checked the Container store…no deal. They don’t carry them. I went to my go-to online source, Amazon, and score! But $40? Holy smokes!
After a summer shopping spree getting four kiddos set up in their new rooms, I was feeling like I needed to be a bit more frugal. Because, let’s face it, even when you are buying from TJMaxx, Homegoods, Target, wholesale clubs, and Craig’s List, it still adds up.
I spied some aqua containers in Target for a couple of bucks and decided to try them out. But first I had to tidy up under the sink to make a new home for them. (Two organized spaces, oh my…I’m giddy.)
Brace yourself- Here is the “before” photo.
I originally organized this space over a year ago. It really worked for a while. But then some of the sprayers broke, other cleaning tools just didn’t fit. It really was time for a little love.
I stopped at Bed Bath and Beyond armed with a handful of 20%off coupons and left with some amazing organizing tools that I thought would out-do my Target bins.
Of course, I started by emptying everything out and cleaning the bins and drawer liner. Then I tossed, recycled, and sorted.
Next I folded the microfiber cloths and dish towels and arranging them in their new bins.
And everybody was settled back into their place. Voila! Good for another year or so! (Actually, I have a plan that involves the hubby to make this space even more spiffy, but since I have no idea when that will happen, it is done for now. Keep looking for an update to this tiny cabinet.)
The back of the cabinet on the right side has four bins with lids that hold extra sponges, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, SOS pads and disposable toilet swishy things (that one is empty – I don’t use them anymore.) The left side is home to cleaning supplies I don’t use throughout the week.
In front there are the two Target bins which hold the microfiber cloths and dish towels that started this whole thing off. Trash bags are on top. In the middle is a bin with my fave cleaning products and scrubbers that I use daily. On the right are the dishwasher tabs in an OXO container to keep them fresh.
Since real estate is at a premium, I keep the most frequently used items at the front.
Okay, back to the drawer. (The original reason I posted.) With the dish towels and microfiber cloths in their new home, and the random items put where they really belong, all I had to do add some of my favorite IKEA drawer liner and nest the Le Cruset and lids.
So much better, no? By keeping the styles to a minimum and choosing pans that nest well with each other, I am able to fit my favorite pans for cold-weather cooking without having a cluttered mess!
Well folks, I’m off to enjoy the sunshine on this gorgeous summer day. Thanks for stopping by.
